about

Range Anxiety; worry on the part of a person driving an electric car that the battery will run out of power before the destination or a suitable charging point is reached.

Sitting firmly within the realms of techno, om10 is a side project of Sun Harmonics co-founder Ruairi McGuinness; “having curated a number of releases over the last few years, to be invited to release new material through Kaneda has been too good an offer to turn down. I’ve always enjoyed performing live alongside the Kaneda family at venues around the region so it felt like a natural progression. I’m particularly excited about the remixes that have been submitted. There is some serious talent around this growing scene right now.”

Opening with spacious panning crystalline lead synths that float and weave above ethereal melodies, Hoegaarden hits the ground running: a distorted and driving statement of intent for the EP that builds into pure enveloping fuzz with added layers of melodic complexity and vocal loops, as heavy kick drum grooves throb below crisp high-hats and percussion. Journeying through atmospheric breakdowns and urgent builds, this IDM influenced techno at it's melodic best, creating a certain dystopian euphoria.

Pulling the listener out of any preconceptions, Nawaz 889_27_4 moves firmly back into familiar om10 territory. A live set favourite, Nawaz is a swirling rush of distortion that clears into rhythmic noise and driving techno with deeply buried melodic elements fighting a losing battle for attention. It’s too enigmatic to be described as industrial techno but it certainly scratches that itch.

Portrait in Silhouette moves into a less challenging pace but without losing any of the force. If Nawaz 889_27_4 was the soundtrack to a ferocious battle scene, Portrait in Silhouette soundtracks the day after; when the dust has settled and the true cost of war is being understood.

Involved in music production since 1992, Ruairi has been on something of an artistic journey over the last few years; “Over the last two years or so I have had the pleasure of working with a number of visuals artists on various projects. I worked on the score for a major TV advertising campaign, held a series of sound design sessions at Baltic 39 and then went on to create performance pieces and an installation at The Baltic Gallery in late 2016. These new creative challenges made me re-examine my process which has fed into these new raw, stripped down and visceral works under the om10 moniker.”
